Carpet Cleaning – How to Make a Home More Tolerable for those with Allergies
Posted by: | Comments
Madison Ohio – People with relatively mild allergies can develop a very serious illness if they continue to be exposed to the allergens. Clean, dry, well maintained carpet actually improves air quality and can help to reduce the allergens in a home. Carpet acts as a filter and as long as this filter is kept clean, it will do its job of trapping dust and allergens and keeping them from becoming airborne and floating into the breathable air space. Dust mites, mold, mildew, fungus and other allergens are easily and effectively removed with proper professional carpet cleaning.
Aside from controlling and preventing allergies, a thorough cleaning can remove odors and prolong the life of the carpet. Cleaning a carpet is more cost effective than buying new.
Do it yourself with at home machines should follow the instructions closely for the most effective cleaning. This should not replace the need for professional cleanings. Vacuum thoroughly first. use an approved cleaning solution and do not add any other chemicals. DO not over wet the carpet and extract as much water as possible.
“Sometimes at home machines can leave too much soap and not be able to properly pull it back out. This will only attract more dirt. A professional cleaning will set them at ease knowing their carpet is properly cleaning and they have good, breathable air.”
Also as major carpet manufacturers will only uphold a warranty if the carpet has been steam cleaned by a certified technician.
It is recommended that allergy sufferers use a vacuum cleaner with a HEPA (high efficiency particulate air) filter and vacuum as often as necessary. Spills should be cleaned up promptly to help prevent the growth of mold. Ask visitors to remove their shoes before entering the home. If new carpeting is needed, choose one with a short, tight weave rather than a long loose fibers. Nylon is an effective allergy controlling carpet fiber. Any throw rugs in the home should be washed often. An air purifier will also help to provide cleaner more breathable air.
Carpet cleaning and vacuum recommendations are based on each individual family and their needs. A husband and a wife may vacuum once a week and get carpet cleaning every two years. A family with children and pets or allergy problems may need to vacuum more frequently and get carpet cleaning annually.
There is also a new anti allergen cleaning and treatment program, as used by EcoClean Carpet Care, that allows cleaning professionals to safely and affordably reduce levels of dust mites and allergens.
We use our specialized cleaning agents followed by an application of Allergy Relief Treatment on carpet, mattresses, upholstery, rugs, and bedding. Allergy Relief Treatment changes the shape of the allergen proteins, making them unrecognizable to the body, which prevents them from causing and allergic reaction” said Mark Cermak IICRC Master Textile Cleaner with EcoClean Carpet Care in Painesville. “The products have been specifically formulated for use around people with allergic illnesses and chemical sensitivities. They can be safely and effectively used in homes with children and pets.”
While regular, professional carpet cleaning alone will help allergy sufferers, the Allergy Relief Treatment adds extra protection.

Asthma Study: No Difference in Carpeted vs. Uncarpeted Homes
Posted by: | CommentsChildhood Asthma Study Published in The New England Journal of Medicine Concludes: No Difference in Allergen Levels in Carpeted vs. Uncarpeted Homes
The findings of a major medical study published in The New England Journal of Medicine refute the widely-held notion that patients with asthma and/or allergies must remove their carpet. Clean, dry carpet is a healthy flooring choice for everyone, including children and adults with asthma and allergies
A major medical study of inner city children with asthma concludes that positive environmental interventions in the children’s homes, such as improved cleaning and the elimination of tobacco smoke, will result in a lessening of the children’s asthma-related symptoms and an increase in their symptom-free days. Further, the Inner-City Asthma Study found no difference in the improvement experienced by children who lived in homes with carpet versus children from homes with other types of flooring. In addition, no difference was found in the levels of allergens measured in carpeted homes compared to homes with hard surface floors.
An article describing the study, titled, “Results of a Home-Based Environmental Intervention among Urban Children with Asthma,” is published on the website of The New England Journal of Medicine. Based on years of research and independent testing, the carpet industry has long maintained that carpet does not contribute to allergy symptoms or poor indoor air quality. However, this is the first peer-reviewed study confirming the industry’s position from a prestigious medical journal.
The study followed 937 children from seven major U.S. cities over the course of a year. Of the participants, more than 50% of the children, aged 5-11 years, had positive skin tests to three or more allergen groups. Other common elements of the group were that they were from families whose incomes were at or close to the poverty level, as well as these factors: Cockroaches were reported in 58% of homes, wall-to-wall carpeting in the child’s bedroom in 55%, a smoker in 48%, mice or rats in 40%, and furry pets in 28%.
At the outset of the study, researchers sought to remove carpet from the children’s bedrooms, but factors such as rental agreements kept them from it. Still, family members were instructed to remove the carpet from their children’s bedrooms wherever possible.
Family members were given HEPA-filter vacuum cleaners and cleaning products and educated about various allergens and how to remove them from the home. Children’s beds were encased in dust-mite-blocking covers, and professional pest exterminators were called in where needed.
The study found that children in the intervention group missed fewer days of school, slept through the night more, and made fewer trips to the emergency room. Contrary to researchers’ expectations, children with carpet in their bedrooms improved as much and did just as well as children who had hard surface floors.
The interventions also produced marked declines in the measured levels of allergens in the home. Again, in contrast to predictions, no difference in allergen reduction was found between homes with carpets and those without carpeting.
The Inner City Asthma Study was sponsored in part by the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences and the National Center for Research Resources of the National Institutes of Health. According to published disclosure statements, none of the researchers or institutions were affiliated with or sponsored by any representative of the carpet industry.
The findings of the Inner City Asthma Study refute the widely-held notion that patients with asthma and/or allergies must remove their carpet, and according to Carpet and Rug Institute President Werner Braun, the study confirms the carpet industry’s assertion that clean, dry carpet is a healthy flooring choice for everyone, including children and adults with asthma and allergies. “CRI’s position is based on a body of sponsored as well as independent research, but the Inner City study is significant in that it comes from the medical community,” Braun said.

Allergy Relief Cleaning
Posted by: | CommentsAllergy Season is Blooming
Ahhh Spring is Finally Here. It can be the most beautiful time of year, but to those with allergies it can also be the most miserable.
Carpet HELPS Allergy Sufferers
Many people have been lead to believe that carpets and allergies are a bad combination. Even some health professionals (doctors and allergists) will encourage their patients to remove carpeting in favor of hardwood or tile floors. Those recommendations are generally based on faulty assumptions. In fact, clean, dry, well-maintained carpet actually improves air quality and can help to reduce the allergens in your home.
Carpet act as a filter, the largest filter in your home. As long as you keep this filter clean, it can continue to do its job, trapping dust and allergens and keeping them from becoming airborne and into your breathable air space.
Without carpet, allergens land on hard surface floors and can become airborne very easily, simply by having someone walk through the room. While it may be easier to clean hard surface floors than carpet, what a daunting task to clean the floor three or more times a day to try to keep up with gravity.
Professional Testing Labs studied the distribution of airborne dust associated with normal activities on hard and soft flooring surfaces. Their findings showed that walking on hard surfaces disturbed more particles. These particles became airborne and entered the breathing zone. In contrast, carpeted surfaces trapped more particles so that walking disturbed fewer particles into the breathing zone. Result: less dust in the breathing zone over carpeted floors.
Dust mites , mold, mildew, fungus, and other allergens are easily and effectively removed with proper professional carpet cleaning. Unlike other flooring, carpet keeps allergens locked inside. Prior to removal, allergens are trapped within the carpet pile fibers. Simple walking will not move those allergens out of the carpet. On the other hand, tile or hardwood floors allow allergens to become airborne with each footstep.
Allergy or asthma relief starts in the bedroom. You spend over a third of your life in your bedroom. For allergy sufferers, the bedroom is the primary source of allergen exposure in your home. To effectively control these allergens (mostly dust mites), in addition to your carpet, your mattress should be regularly cleaned, about every 6 months for allergy sufferers. (Typical charge for cleaning a mattress is $100 plus $25 for the allergy relief treatment!)
Don’t forget your pillows. An old pillow can contain up to 20 percent of its weight in dead dust mites, dust mite body parts and their fecal matter. Pillows should be cleaned and treated with a dust mite-neutralizing product, or replaced every six months.
IAQ, VOCs, Carpet and Allergies
The primary focus of IAQ (Indoor Air Quality) and toxicity typically revolves around Volatile Organic Compounds (VOC) emissions. In reality carpet is one of the lowest VOC emitters of flooring materials, significantly less than VCT, wood & ceramic floor adhesives (even low VOC types) and paint. In fact plasticizers, glues, urethanes and finishes on vinyl and wood floors are typically much harsher toxins.

Andrechelle and I just returned from a Carpet Cleaners Advanced Technical Conference at the Sapphire Scientific facility in Nashville Tennessee. Only the worlds greatest carpet cleaners were invited to attend this exclusive event.
We were honored to be invited as presenters to speak to the attendees, along with some of the foremost experts in the carpet cleaning industry. Each presenter spoke about there specific field of expertise.
Presentations on topics included fine fabric cleaning and upholstery cleaning; advanced carpet color repair and carpet re-dyeing; carpet cleaning equipment trials, testing and comparison; branding, marketing and networking.
Again this year we plan to attend several technical conferences, speaking at some, teaching at others. From the outside it may appear that we are attending these technical conferences to speak and teach.
But we are also attending to learn. We’ll be attending a number of courses, lectures, workshops and seminars as well as dozens of training sessions throughout the year.
Technical Conferences offer the highest potential to learn the advanced skills in our field.
Attending conferences is a professionally rewarding experience, presenting a unique opportunity due to the vast melting pot of expertise and experience. Put hundreds like-minded people in a room and you’re bound to get something good out of it. Conversation is the inspiration for innovation. When we attend a conference the opportunity to contribute to the carpet cleaning industry is huge.
We go to conferences to teach, learn, and play. But mostly, we go to benefit you by being the World’s Greatest Carpet Cleaner!
Carpet Cleaner Guilty of Improper Dumping – Fined
Posted by: | CommentsA Thousand Oaks, California based carpet cleaner has been charged with unlawful discharge of materials into a storm sewer, a misdemeanor, for illegally dumping his carpet cleaning waste water.
Ryan Edlestein, 24, of Thousand Oaks recently pleaded guilty to unlawful dumping of materials into a sewer, a misdemeanor. The charges arose from him disposing of carpet cleaning waste into the city’s sewer system through a manhole. A concerned citizen reported the activity to the police, resulting in the issuance of a citation and subsequent criminal charges.
It is against the law to remove manhole covers to gain access to the city sewer system.
The defendant was ordered to pay a fine of $250 and an additional $100 to the state restitution fund. He was placed on misdemeanor probation for 12 months, requiring him to obey all laws and provide proof of proper disposal of any waste.
Any subsequent violations could be charged as a felony.
Without the vigilance and assistance of private citizens, crimes of unlawful disposal or dumping often go unsolved. This prosecution should also serve as a deterrent to other businesses that are responsible for knowing and complying with all applicable rules and regulations.

Far too many carpet cleaners will empty their waste directly onto your driveway, street or parking lot.
This is another reason why EcoClean Carpet Care uses natural, bio-degradable products, which have been certified as non toxic to aquatic ecosystems, non toxic to humans, do not contain ingredients that are carcinogens, are not corrosive to skin or eyes, not combustible, does not contribute to the production of photochemical smog, tropospheric ozone, or poor air quality and meets established volatile organic content (VOC) limits.
Many carpet cleaners don’t even think about how and where to properly dispose of the waste that is removed from your carpets during professional carpet cleaning. Far too many carpet cleaners will empty their waste directly onto your driveway, street or parking lot.
We dispose of waste into the sanitary sewer system.

Top Ten Tips for the Greenest Carpet Cleaning
Posted by: | CommentsBETTER, GREENER CARPET CLEANING
- Ask your carpet cleaners what steps they’ve taken to be greener. Focus on the trucks, the cleaning equipment used, the detergents and water disposal. Ask if they have the Carpet & Rug Institute Seal of Approval.
- Ask your carpet cleaner how long the carpet will take to dry? Request that your carpet cleaner bring their own high-powered fans to dry the freshly cleaned carpet, while they are at your home or office.
- Schedule to have your carpet cleaned during the winter when humidity is low and specials are common.
- Show your carpet cleaner all your spots and problem areas. Identify stains when possible.
- Ask about carpet pad replacement for selected areas if pet urine odors linger. Ask your carpet cleaner if they are trained and certified to provide other necessary carpet repairs.
- Tell your carpet cleaner if you’re fragrance-sensitive or chemical sensitive. They might be able to use less or no detergent, or a more mild alternative, avoid any fragrance enhanced products, and rinse more thoroughly.
- Confirm prior to scheduling your carpet cleaning appointment whether there is a charge to come back and retreat any areas not cleaned to your satisfaction. Better cleaners offer a guarantee!
- Ask your carpet cleaner if they offer a paper free invoicing option.
- Ask your carpet cleaner if they offer green carpet protector, free of solvents and harmful, hazardous, carcinogenic chemicals.
- Use our Spot and Stain Removal Guide for emergency spill cleanup.
